Somerset Santander Branch Closing Amid UK-Wide Bank Network Overhaul

Santander has announced a significant transformation of its UK branch network, with plans to close 44 branches nationwide, including the Bridgwater location on Fore Street – the sole Somerset branch affected. Set to close on 29 April 2026, this move is part of a broader strategy driven by evolving customer preferences and the rise of digital banking.

The bank highlights that 96% of transactions now occur online, while in-branch banking has declined by 66% in recent years. This shift has prompted Santander to adapt its services to meet modern demands and continue supporting customers in new ways.

To maintain in-person assistance, Santander will introduce Community Bankers who will provide help at Santander Local branches, Banking Hubs, or community venues such as libraries and centres where dedicated branches are unavailable. These advisors will offer money management guidance and general banking support, typically on a weekly schedule.

These changes coincide with Santander’s parent company, Banco Santander, announcing a global cost-cutting plan last October that involves cutting 1,400 jobs. Across the UK, Santander currently runs 111 Santander Local branches and six Work Cafés—community hubs hosting financial advice sessions and SME networking events to bolster local economies.

While some Work Cafés, including the Oxford branch, have already closed, new locations are planned to open later this year. However, the closures jeopardize the jobs of approximately 291 employees amid ongoing union consultations. The bank assures affected staff will be given opportunities to apply for other roles within the company.

Despite branch closures, Santander remains committed to investing in its network. Post-restructuring, it will operate 305 branches, including 244 full-service, 36 reduced-hour branches, and six Work Cafés. Additionally, 30 branches will receive refurbishments featuring digital self-service rooms, upgraded ATMs, and enhanced private meeting areas. Improvements to Santander’s mobile app and call centre services are also underway.

A spokesperson for Santander UK stated: “The ongoing shift to digital banking drives our changes to better support customers. We will continue investing in our diverse branch formats and digital services to meet customers’ preferences and banking needs.”
