Somerset’s hopes of securing their first County Championship title rely on a favourable result from Leicestershire, admits head coach Jason Kerr. The West Country team saw their lead at the top of Division One slip away last week following a 185-run defeat against Yorkshire.
Chasing an imposing target of 214 runs with seven wickets remaining on Friday, Somerset struggled at Headingley, losing those wickets after adding a mere 28 runs. This collapse handed Warwickshire an 11-point lead over Somerset going into the final round of fixtures, with Nottinghamshire trailing a further four points in third place.
The concluding matches commence on Thursday, featuring Nottinghamshire hosting Yorkshire, Somerset welcoming Surrey to Taunton, and Warwickshire facing Leicestershire-coached by former Somerset player Alfonso Thomas.

Kerr emphasised the importance of focusing on Somerset’s own performance ahead of other results. “First and foremost, we must beat Surrey. While we cannot control other outcomes, we certainly need some fortune on our side,” he stated.
Reflecting on the disappointing final-day batting collapse, Kerr commented, “It was truly disheartening. We entered the day with belief and the hope of early partnerships, but the pitch appeared to regain its earlier-day characteristics, offering an extraordinary amount of movement for a day-four surface.”
Speaking about the squad’s mood, Kerr added, “The significance of this match is palpable. We understood its importance deeply, yet unfortunately, Yorkshire outplayed us on the day.”
