The generosity of Somerset’s residents has shone brilliantly in support of St Margaret’s Hospice, as the campaign “Every Moment Counts” exceeded its £100,000 fundraising target within just 13 hours and reached an impressive total of £160,917 in less than two days.
This remarkable achievement concluded on the evening of Friday, June 20, after a 36-hour online appeal marking the hospice’s 45th anniversary and unveiling a new five-year plan. Throughout the campaign, 1,297 donations flowed in, many given in memory of cherished loved ones. Central to this success was the dedication of 80 volunteer “Champions,” who shared personal stories and galvanized the community’s support. Their efforts were significantly enhanced by generous match funding pledges totaling £70,000 from local individuals and charitable trusts.
St Margaret’s Hospice, a vital service for patients with life-limiting illnesses across Somerset, plans to use the funds to expand early-stage care. Their forward-looking strategy, Time to Care, Now & Always, focuses on promoting earlier access to hospice services, empowering families, and educating healthcare professionals about hospice roles.

Among the powerful stories shared was that of Rena and Ian. Ian’s diagnosis of a brain tumour came late in his journey, and hospice support arrived only in his final stages. Rena reflects, “It’s not just about the end – it’s about living well until the very end. The hospice didn’t just help Ian; they helped me, too. They gave me back the chance to just love him, and that’s something I’ll always be grateful for. You don’t have to do it all alone. And, you don’t have to wait until you’re at breaking point to ask for help. Hospice care is there to make life better, even when time is limited. I’ll always be grateful. But I wish we’d asked for help sooner.”
The campaign was supported by numerous events across Somerset, including fashion shows, summer solstice barbecues, and sponsored walks, all contributing to the total raised. Hannah Roberts, Head of Fundraising, expressed her gratitude: “This appeal has truly captured people’s hearts and inspired widespread participation. From individuals and families to local businesses, sports clubs, and community groups, Somerset has united to make an extraordinary impact.”
Special recognition was given to the 80 Champions and match funders whose steadfast support unlocked the full potential of the appeal. The campaign also attracted endorsements from prominent local figures such as Tommy Banner and The Wurzels, Somerset County Cricket Club, Clinton Rogers DL, Gideon Amos MP, and the Glastonbury Festival team.
Covering annual running costs of over £15 million, St Margaret’s relies heavily on donations, events, and a network of 31 charity shops to fund around 75% of its expenses. This latest fundraising success provides a vital boost amid rising community needs and escalating costs.
Joanna Hall, Director of Fundraising, Retail and Communications, reflected on the campaign’s impact: “This appeal represents the incredible power of community spirit and collective action. We are deeply thankful for the support during such challenging times, when so many causes need attention. This is a humbling milestone and a strong foundation as we continue our work to deliver compassionate care and share the difference your generosity makes. Ultimately, we exist to serve Somerset, and we survive because of you. Thank you.”
