Donovan Dyer, a dedicated racer from Shepton Mallet, is reaching out for support after a major setback in his racing career. Competing in the Kent Models MX-5 Championship with Bromley Motorsport, Donovan is currently vying for top rookie honors. However, during a recent intense heatwave at Oulton Park, his car’s engine overheated and blew a gasket, forcing him to rebuild the entire engine—a costly repair for the fully self-funded driver.
“I work three jobs to fund my racing dream,” Donovan explains. “Every entry fee, tire change, and repair comes out of my own pocket. The recent engine failure has stretched my resources to the limit.” To continue racing this season, Donovan has launched a GoFundMe campaign seeking £5,000. In return for support, donors will have their names featured on his car’s livery and be entered into prize draws for exclusive racing merchandise, paddock passes, and even a hot lap in a race-ready car.
Donovan’s passion for motorsport started early. Born in Bermuda and moving to the UK at age ten, he overcame the challenges of dyslexia with the help of supportive schools in Shepton Mallet. He began karting at Bristol’s Avonmouth indoor track and progressed through increasingly competitive racing series, including the Junior Saloon Car Championship. A STEM-focused education nurtured his ambition, and acceptance into the Motorsport UK Academy’s Diploma in Sporting Excellence broadened his horizons within the industry.

To fund his racing career, Donovan juggles multiple jobs, including coaching at supercar experience companies and working night shifts at Bristol Airport. He is also a passionate volunteer with the Race for Diversity initiative, helping to promote inclusion and STEAM education in motorsport.
With three race weekends left in his rookie season, Donovan is determined to overcome financial obstacles and finish strong. “Motorsport is expensive, but small contributions from many supporters can make a huge difference. If 500 people each donate £10, I can complete the season and keep chasing my dream.”
