Somerset Pubs Shine in UK’s Top 100 List by The Good Food Guide

Pubs across Somerset and Wiltshire have earned prestigious recognition, securing spots in The Good Food Guide’s inaugural list of the UK’s top 100 pubs. This achievement is especially remarkable amid a challenging period for the pub industry, with closures averaging one per day nationwide in 2025.

Leeds’ Highland Laddie claimed the top position overall, but the South West, home to Somerset and Wiltshire, also made a formidable impression. Eight pubs from Somerset and two from Wiltshire featured in the highly competitive list, highlighting the region’s vibrant pub culture.

Wiltshire’s The Beckford Arms led the regional rankings at fourth place. Somerset favorites closely followed, including The Barrington Boar at number 12, The Bath Arms at Longleat at 21, and the Hop Pole Inn at 29. Other Somerset pubs making the list were The Queens Arms (60), The Exmoor Forest Inn (66), The Cotley Inn (80), and The Manor House Inn (99). Wiltshire’s The Longs Arms secured the 94th spot.

Established in 1951, The Good Food Guide praised these pubs for delivering “proper food and proper beer,” emphasizing their commitment to quality amid an uncertain industry landscape. Editor Chloë Hamilton commented, “We sought out pubs that master both excellent drinking and dining experiences. The more we explored, the more gems we uncovered—not just tucked away in the Cotswolds.”

Entries were evaluated on food quality, atmosphere, and reader recommendations. The Readers’ Choice Award was presented to The Broad Chare in Newcastle, reflecting popular acclaim.

The guide is supported by Timothy Taylor’s Landlord, Tracklements, and Koffmann’s Potatoes. Jane Jenkins, marketing director at Timothy Taylor’s, congratulated all winners, noting many serve Timothy Taylor’s Landlord, the UK’s top cask ale. She extended special recognition to The Highland Laddie and The Broad Chare.

Simon Martin, founder of The Food Heroes, expressed optimism: “We are thrilled by the strong support for Britain’s best pubs during these challenging times for our industry!”
