Somerset find themselves in a commanding position in Division One of the County Championship, leading the table as the season nears its conclusion. After a resounding 377-run victory over Leicestershire at Grace Road, the West Country side are on the cusp of claiming their maiden red-ball cricket title.
All-rounder Craig Overton emphasised the need for continued focus and effort in the final two matches. “We’ve got a bit of momentum going into these last two games, but I think we’ve had momentum the whole year really, we’ve played a lot of good cricket,” he said. “Now it’s just a case of finishing off the season the way we’ve played all year, but we know it’s going to be hard work.”
Somerset will face Yorkshire and Surrey, both positioned in the lower half of the table. Overton warns against complacency, noting the quality of these opponents and the absence of easy fixtures at this stage. “They’re still very good sides and there are no easy wins, so we know we’re going to have to turn up and put in a performance,” he added.

Reflecting on recent seasons, Overton remarked, “We’ve been in this position a few times in recent seasons where we’ve been in with a chance. It doesn’t get any easier, but it’s nice having a lead at this stage. There could be a bit of rain around, so to be able to have four or five-point lead is quite a big thing.”
In the recent match, Overton led the bowling attack with figures of four for 33, helping dismiss Leicestershire for 145. Supporting bowlers Jack Leach and Lewis Gregory took three for 30 and two for ten respectively. Gregory, who suffered a hamstring concern, was taken off as a precaution. Overton explained, “He’s just feeling a bit tight in his hamstring. He’s a big part of our team going into those last couple of games, so as much rest as he could get was the most important thing really, to be fit and ready for next week.”
As Somerset prepare to wrap up the season, their focus remains on maintaining their high standards to lift the championship trophy for the first time in their history.
