Somerset Pensioner Accused as ‘Drug Mule’ Battles for Life in Chilean Prison

William ‘Billy Boy’ Eastment, an 80-year-old bowls enthusiast from Somerset, is fighting for his life after being imprisoned in Chile’s notorious Santiago 1 Penitentiary. Arrested last May for allegedly carrying £200,000 worth of methamphetamine, Eastment’s health has rapidly worsened, with multiple bouts of pneumonia compounding his existing medical conditions.

Sources close to the case reveal that Eastment has suffered four episodes of pneumonia since his detention, triggering grave concerns over his survival. “His condition is frail, and prison life is exacerbating it,” an insider said. Legal representatives hope to expedite proceedings by negotiating a streamlined trial process akin to a plea bargain, aiming to resolve the case swiftly due to his fragile state.

Eastment was apprehended after arriving from Mexico, where he claimed he was deceived by scammers into believing he had won a prize and was en route to Australia. Despite this, extradition efforts to repatriate him to the UK have stalled, with officials warning the process may take years. Chilean law prohibits replacing drug-related sentences with expulsion, ruling out early release via deportation.

Currently, lawyers are pursuing a compromise that would allow Eastment’s release from prison under strict surveillance conditions. However, this plan hinges on securing a financial guarantor to cover his medical expenses, as Eastment entered Chile as a tourist and thus lacks access to national healthcare. Attempts to identify a family member willing to assume this responsibility are ongoing, but so far, no guarantor has been found.

Compounding his predicament, Eastment’s UK state pension has been suspended during his prolonged absence, leaving him without income. “Without family stepping forward and official approval, he remains trapped,” a source confirmed.

Eastment has maintained he was misled by emails purportedly from International Monetary Fund officials and was contacted in Mexico by a woman named Carolina, who claimed he needed to travel to New Zealand to claim inheritance documents. His lawyer corroborated these accounts, highlighting his vulnerability to deception.

The community in Milborne Port, Somerset, remains shocked by the dramatic turn of events as efforts continue to secure Eastment’s release and safeguard his deteriorating health.
