Somerset Paedophile Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for Child Rape

An 85-year-old man from Somerset has been sentenced to life imprisonment for non-recent sexual offences, including the rape of a child. Bruce Marshall’s arrest and conviction followed a detailed investigation by Avon and Somerset Police, triggered unexpectedly during an unrelated inquiry.

The case arose when officers visited a victim’s home and she tearfully revealed that she had suffered sexual abuse as a child. Subsequent interviews with witnesses whom she had confided in helped build a strong case against Marshall. In February 2023, police interviewed Marshall at his home in Woolavington, near Bridgwater. Their investigation uncovered overwhelming evidence and witness testimonies contradicting his account.

Marshall was arrested in 2023, and authorities seized his passport amid concerns about overseas connections. Evidence revealed that he sexually assaulted the victim both at her home and in the changing rooms of a Somerset swimming pool.

On November 29, 2024, Marshall was formally charged with rape, two counts of gross indecency with a child, and two counts of sexual assault against a child. He pleaded guilty at Exeter Crown Court in March 2025. At sentencing on April 27, 2025, the judge warned him to prepare for a significant sentence, reflecting the severity of his crimes.

Throughout the investigation, the police maintained close contact with the victim, ensuring she received appropriate support. During the sentencing hearing, the victim courageously read a victim impact statement. She described her long struggle to come forward, stating: “After decades of feeling too scared to speak out against Marshall, for fear of not being believed, it was him who handed Marshall to me on a silver plate to finally get justice.”

Detective Constable Damon Carney, of the specialist child protection unit at Avon and Somerset Police, emphasized the importance of the victim and witnesses’ courage in securing justice, despite the offences being non-recent. He said: “This sentence reflects the harm caused and the ongoing risk posed by Marshall. We want to assure victims that no matter how long ago the crime occurred, they will be believed, and investigations will be pursued.”

Speaking during sentencing, HH Judge Climie told Marshall, “This case is not about you, but about the victim — a victim of your torture and cruelty. Your guilty plea does not compensate her suffering.”

Marshall was sentenced to 22 years in prison, with an additional year on licence. Given his age, it is likely that he will spend the remainder of his life in custody.
