Cuddles & Care Children’s Day Nursery in Ilminster, Somerset, has been described by Ofsted as a “safe, welcoming space” where children form warm, trusting relationships with staff. The inspectors acknowledged the nursery’s dedication to creating a nurturing environment and close collaboration with parents to support children’s routines and individual needs.
The report highlights the positive atmosphere at the nursery, noting how staff provide comfort when children are upset and encourage growing independence. Safety education is also emphasized, with staff teaching children to wait their turn on equipment like slides.
Inclusion is another strong point. Parents praised the nursery for effectively supporting the diverse needs of their children, reflecting a commitment to embracing all learners.

However, Ofsted identified several areas requiring improvement. Concerns were raised about children’s achievement levels, especially older children who are not consistently building communication, language, and foundational social skills such as sharing, turn-taking, and listening. Progress in these essential areas was found to be slower than expected.
While children are gaining confidence in self-care and physical skills—demonstrated by their ability to dress themselves and engage energetically in outdoor play—the report noted inconsistencies in staff expectations and behaviour management. Some incidents involving turn-taking were not addressed promptly or effectively modeled, which may hinder children’s social development and progression.
Overall, the nursery met expected standards in children’s welfare and wellbeing, inclusion, and leadership and governance. Nonetheless, Ofsted calls for improvements in achievement, behaviour and attitudes, and curriculum quality to better support children’s learning and development.
