Somerset Nursery Praised for Safety and Warmth but Needs Improvements in Learning and Behaviour

Cuddles & Care Children’s Day Nursery in Ilminster, Somerset, has been recognized as a safe and welcoming environment for young children, according to a recent Ofsted inspection. Inspectors praised the nursery for fostering warm, trusting relationships between staff and children, and for working closely with families to support consistent routines.

The report commended the nursery for its inclusive approach and effective safety practices, including encouraging children to wait their turn during play. Children were observed confidently engaging in outdoor activities that enhance their physical development, such as running, climbing, and jumping, as well as showing growing independence in self-care tasks like dressing for outdoor play.

Despite these positive aspects, Ofsted raised concerns about children’s overall achievement and behaviour. Inspectors noted that older children do not consistently make strong progress in communication, language, and foundational skills like sharing, taking turns, and maintaining attention. Furthermore, inconsistencies in staff expectations and management of behaviour sometimes leave children unclear about appropriate conduct, potentially hindering their social development.

The inspection rated the nursery as meeting the expected standards in children’s welfare and wellbeing, inclusion, and leadership, but highlighted the need for improvement in achievement, behaviour and attitudes, and curriculum and teaching.
