Somerset NHS Midwife Trades Scrubs for Sequins in Bid to Become Miss England

Skye Dorland, a dedicated NHS midwife from Somerset, is swapping her scrubs and crocs for sequins and high heels as she competes to be crowned Miss England. At just 23, Skye recently claimed the title of Miss Somerset and is now preparing to take the stage at the Miss England finals this November.

By day, Skye works tirelessly on the maternity wards at Musgrove Park and Yeovil Hospitals, part of the Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, supporting women through pregnancy, childbirth, and postnatal care. Now, she’s balancing demanding hospital shifts with rehearsals and appearances for the glamorous pageant.

“This is my first ever pageant, and I feel incredibly honoured to have this opportunity,” said Skye, who hails from Yeovil. “My goal is to highlight the vital and inspiring role midwives play in women’s lives. Every day, I witness the strength and resilience of women, and I want to use this platform to empower them and raise awareness about maternity services.”

Aside from her healthcare career, Skye is a talented singer and performer, with a love for the stage stemming from her involvement in local theatre groups in London and Somerset. “Performing allows me to unwind and reconnect with my creative side,” she shared. “Being part of this journey has also introduced me to new friends and experiences I cherish.”

Skye’s accomplishments extend beyond midwifery and pageantry. She holds a first-class honours degree from Bournemouth University and is actively working toward her band 6 status within the NHS. Passionate about charity, she recently organised a Beauty with a Purpose fundraising event on social media for DKMS, a charity dedicated to fighting blood cancer, aiming to increase stem cell donor registration.
