Somerset’s challenge to retain their Vitality T20 Blast crown and qualify for a sixth straight finals day took a serious blow after a 36-run defeat to Worcestershire Rapids on Sunday.
Having reached the finals for the last three seasons and started this campaign with two wins, Somerset have slumped, losing five of their last six matches. To keep their quarter-final aspirations alive, they likely need to win all four remaining games.
Worcestershire set a competitive target of 180 runs, thanks largely to an unbroken 58-run partnership between Sikandar Raza, who scored a dynamic 46, and Brett D’Oliveira’s unbeaten 41*. This stand accelerated the Rapids’ innings after a steady start.

Somerset’s innings began cautiously with Tom Banton and James Rew putting on promising starts. However, wickets tumbled mid-innings, tipped by Usama Mir’s incisive 3-34 that triggered a collapse of three wickets for just three runs. Matthew Waite also bowled economically to maintain pressure, contributing 3-23 in a crucial spell.
Head coach Jason Kerr reflected on the performance, saying, “We didn’t execute our bowling plans well enough and conceded 20-25 runs too many. Batting-wise, we never really gained momentum or got into the contest. A few of our key players are feeling the pressure, particularly after losing Jake (Bally) to a quad strain during the warm-up, which didn’t help.”
Batting first, Worcestershire’s openers Kashif Ali and Isaac Mohammed started aggressively with a 33-run opening partnership. Mohammed pushed the score forward with 34 runs off 23 balls before being trapped lbw by Daniel Sams. After some quick wickets, Raza and D’Oliveira steadied the innings and accelerated late, with Raza hitting five fours and two sixes.
Somerset’s reply was disrupted early after losing Will Smeed and their stand-in captain Tom Kohler-Cadmore in quick succession. Banton and Rew managed a 60-run partnership that seemed to offer hope before Mir’s leg-spin and Waite’s accurate bowling dismantled the lineup.
Despite their efforts, Somerset fell short by 36 runs, leaving their Vitality T20 Blast knockout qualification hanging by a thread. The team now faces intense pressure to win their remaining fixtures to keep their title defense alive.
