Somerset Mum to Run London Marathon for Minehead Coach Crash Children

A devoted mum from Somerset is preparing to run the London Marathon to raise vital funds for children affected by a tragic coach crash on Exmoor. Her son, one of the young survivors, continues to struggle with the emotional aftermath of the accident.

The crash, which occurred on July 17 last year, involved a Minehead Middle School coach that left the A396 near Wheddon Cross and slid down a 20-foot slope while returning from a trip to Exmoor Zoo. Ten-year-old Oliver Price tragically lost his life, and 21 other children were injured.

Helen, 42, shares that her son still needs ongoing support to cope with his trauma. He experiences significant anxiety around large vehicles, visibly showing fear whenever one passes by.

Determined to help, Helen aims to complete the marathon on April 26 and raise £1,000 to fund specialist support at the school. These specialists will work with small groups of children to help them manage their emotions and heal from the ordeal.

Laura Mackie, headteacher of Minehead Middle School, expressed deep gratitude for the overwhelming support the community has shown since the crash. She praised Helen’s fundraising efforts and sent her best wishes for the marathon.

“The kindness and generosity from people near and far have meant the world to our students, staff, and families,” Ms. Mackie said. “Helen’s dedication to this cause is inspiring, and we are incredibly grateful for her commitment.”

Despite the difficulty of the past months, the community’s compassion has been a powerful source of strength. “We are moving forward together, one step at a time, feeling very supported and very grateful,” Ms. Mackie added.
