Mia Rose, a 49-year-old mother of two from Somerset, faced a harsh wake-up call after years of heavy drinking, drug use, and unhealthy eating habits left her weighing 26.5 stone. For 14 years, Mia’s weekends were marked by four-day binges on alcohol and cocaine, sometimes consuming up to six grams of cocaine each weekend and drinking from Thursday through Sunday.
Her lifestyle took a severe toll on her health. At her heaviest, Mia wore a size 32, struggled with mobility issues to the point of needing a seat in her shower, and even had to crawl up the stairs due to swollen ankles and exhaustion. The constant hangovers triggered comfort eating, spiraling into a cycle of bingeing on high-calorie junk food.
The turning point came in 2021 when Mia was forced to use a mobility scooter, as she could no longer walk even five minutes unaided. That moment prompted a profound realisation: “I’m not supposed to be like this.” Faced with the prospect of either dying or changing for the sake of her children and granddaughter, Mia resolved to take control of her health.

She immediately quit alcohol and drugs cold turkey and replaced her junk food diet with wholesome meals of chicken, vegetables, and quinoa. Mia began her fitness journey slowly, starting with just 10 minutes of workouts using resistance bands. Gradually, she progressed to 30-minute cardio sessions and YouTube workouts, eventually losing 11 stone in three and a half years through diet and exercise alone.
When she reached a weight plateau at 15 stone, Mia sought further assistance with Mounjaro, a medication that helped her shed an additional 7 stone. Today, she weighs 8 stone 9 pounds and fits into a size 8.
Mia credits cognitive behaviour therapy for helping her overcome self-doubt and maintain the mental resilience needed to sustain her lifestyle change. “Everything came together and I saw some light at the end of the tunnel,” she reflects. “It’s been a slow process, but I had hope.”
Her transformation has not only restored her physical health but also improved her social confidence. Although she still experiences social anxiety, Mia says she feels normal and no longer stands out when she goes out.
Before her transformation, Mia’s typical meals were indulgent and high-calorie: crisps or chocolate for breakfast, sandwiches with chips or deep-fried food for lunch, large portions of pasta for dinner, and desserts like chocolate or cake. Now, her diet consists of light, healthy options such as chicken satay sticks for lunch and chicken with steamed vegetables and quinoa for dinner, complemented by protein snacks.
Mia’s story is a powerful reminder that with determination, support, and a willingness to change, it’s possible to overcome even the most challenging lifestyle hurdles and reclaim a healthy, vibrant life.
