Rachel Gilmour, the Liberal Democrat MP for Tiverton and Minehead, has come under fire after documents revealed she charged birthday cards, golf club hospitality, and alcohol to public expenses — despite an annual salary exceeding £91,000.
The disclosures, uncovered by Conservative campaigner James Wright through a Freedom of Information request, show Gilmour claimed £5.50 for a birthday card, £5.50 for beverages, and £2.75 labeled as hospitality from Tiverton Golf Club. Additionally, she submitted a £10.24 subsistence claim that included a half pint of Thatchers Haze cider, which was subsequently rejected by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA).
While some claims were denied, others like £1,345.82 for office redecoration and £4,566.44 for moving expenses were approved and reimbursed with taxpayer funds.

Gilmour has faced criticism before, including allegations of appointing her son to a staff role and reportedly swearing at security personnel during a visit to Hinkley Point. Her spokesperson defended the expense claims, saying, “Rachel Gilmour has accurately logged her expenses with IPSA, and where appropriate those have been paid.” The spokesperson also accused Conservative commentators of hypocrisy, citing past mismanagement of public funds under Conservative governments.
Among the released receipts is a photo of a meal and drink valued at £11.81 — including chips, a halloumi wrap, a hot drink, and cider. Although this particular expense was rejected, several smaller claims were approved.
