Somerset Morrisons Receives Low Food Hygiene Rating Amid Call for Improvements

A Morrisons store in Radstock, Somerset, has been rated two out of five in a recent food hygiene inspection by the Food Standards Agency (FSA). The evaluation, conducted on May 28, examined three critical areas: hygienic food handling, cleanliness and condition of the premises, and food safety management.

While food hygiene practices such as preparation, cooking, reheating, cooling, and storage were found to be generally satisfactory, the cleanliness and overall condition of the Morrisons Daily store required significant improvement. Specific concerns included the cleanliness of facilities, the state of the building, proper layout, ventilation, handwashing facilities, and pest control measures—all essential for maintaining stringent food hygiene standards.

In terms of food safety management—which involves routine checks to ensure that food sold is safe, staff training, and confidence in maintaining standards—the store was rated as generally satisfactory.

This rating comes amid reports highlighting that multiple Morrisons stores have failed recent food hygiene inspections. A Morrisons spokesperson responded, emphasizing the company’s commitment to food safety, stating: “We have taken immediate action to address and resolve all the issues raised—including in our recently expanded estate. We are awaiting re-rating inspections in a number of stores.”

Elsewhere in the region, a Morrisons store in Bristol received the lowest possible food hygiene score of zero, prompting urgent calls for drastic improvements. However, eight other nearby Morrisons stores achieved good to very good ratings, illustrating a mixed performance across the chain.
