Somerset Morrisons Receives ‘Improvement Necessary’ Rating After Food Safety Inspection

A Morrisons store in Radstock, Somerset, has been given a food hygiene rating of two out of five following a recent inspection by the Food Standards Agency (FSA).

The assessment, conducted on May 28 at the Fortescue Road location, evaluated the store across three main categories: hygienic food handling, cleanliness and condition of facilities and building, and management of food safety.

While hygienic food handling—including preparation, cooking, reheating, cooling, and storage—was rated as generally satisfactory, inspectors found that cleanliness and the condition of the store’s facilities required improvement. Concerns highlighted included the layout, ventilation, hand-washing facilities, and pest control measures, all vital to maintaining proper food hygiene standards.

Management of food safety was also rated as generally satisfactory. This category considers whether staff are knowledgeable about food safety and if procedures are in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe for consumption. The FSA expressed confidence in the store’s ability to maintain these standards moving forward.

This latest rating comes amid reports that several Morrisons stores across the UK have failed food hygiene inspections, drawing increased scrutiny of the supermarket chain’s overall food safety practices.

In response, a Morrisons spokesperson stated: “The food safety within our supermarkets, convenience, and franchise-operated stores is incredibly important to us. We have taken immediate action to address and resolve all issues raised—including those in our recently expanded estate. We are currently awaiting re-rating inspections in a number of stores.”

Meanwhile, another Morrisons store in Bristol has been issued a warning to make immediate and significant improvements after receiving a zero food hygiene score. However, eight other local Morrisons stores earned good and very good ratings, demonstrating a mix of standards within the chain.
