Plans are underway to establish a new electric vehicle (EV) charging hub near a busy McDonald’s restaurant in Somerset, located off the M5 motorway. The proposed site is within the Oaktree Business Park on the A38 Bristol Road in Highbridge, just south of the Edithmead roundabout—a key junction connecting the town to junction 22 of the M5.
The business park is a bustling area home to several well-known outlets, including drive-thru restaurants like Greggs, McDonald’s, and Starbucks, as well as larger businesses such as Howdens, Screwfix, and a Ford dealership. The new charging hub is planned for a currently vacant plot at the intersection of Angus Way and Highland Way, close to Tarnock Garage and directly opposite the recently opened McDonald’s outlet.
If approved by Somerset Council within the next six months, the hub will feature 16 ultra-rapid charging points capable of servicing a broad range of electric vehicles. The site will be divided into two parts with separate access points: Highland Way will accommodate the charging stations alongside a substation and two supercharger cabinets, while Angus Way will host a self-service car wash facility, structured around a one-way traffic system near the Ford garage.

Representing the applicant, Enzygo Ltd highlighted the importance of expanding EV infrastructure to meet urgent national and local demands. The spokesperson emphasized that the development supports the UK’s net zero goals by providing a strategically located, accessible charging hub close to major transport routes. This advance not only benefits motorway users but also enhances the nearby employment area’s appeal and sustainability for employees, businesses, fleet operators, and visitors alike.
The project is designed with modest scale and low height, incorporating soft landscaping and biodiversity measures to improve both the visual and ecological value of the area. Somerset Council’s decision on the proposal is anticipated before the end of the year.
In addition, plans for a similar EV charging hub by Ionity GbmH at Dunball services in Bridgwater are also awaiting approval.
