Taunton MP Gideon Amos has issued an urgent call for immediate interim funding to support maternity and paediatric services at Musgrove Park Hospital following the sudden closure of Yeovil’s maternity unit and special care baby unit.
Describing the situation as “at breaking point,” Amos highlighted the overwhelming pressure Musgrove Park is facing as it becomes the nearest alternative care provider for expectant mothers and newborns requiring specialist services. He criticized the government’s delayed investment plan, which currently schedules improvements between 2030 and 2035, as insufficient in light of the recent developments.
Following the announcement that Yeovil’s critical maternity facilities would close starting Monday, Amos reached out to Health Minister Wes Streeting and is collaborating with Yeovil MP Adam Dance to advocate for the reopening of these essential units.

“Musgrove Park is under enormous strain, with maternity services stretched to their limits,” Amos stated. “The investment promised for 2033 must be expedited immediately to address this crisis, especially now after the closures in Yeovil.”
In response to growing community concerns, Amos will host a public meeting on Friday, May 30, at the Creative Innovation Centre in Paul Street, Taunton. The meeting aims to gather local input and raise awareness about the urgent need for NHS improvements in the region.
“Engaging with the public is vital to ensure the NHS delivers the quality care we all expect and deserve,” Amos added.
