Somerset Man to Face Retrial for Mother’s Alleged Murder

A man from Somerset is set to face a retrial for the alleged murder of his mother after previously pleading not guilty to the charge. Richard Breed, aged 62, had earlier admitted to manslaughter in connection with the death of his 87-year-old mother, Brenda Breed.

Brenda was found deceased at her home in Westonzoyland, near Bridgwater, on Tuesday, July 22, 2025. The case has now been scheduled for a retrial starting January 4, 2027, with proceedings expected to last approximately 12 days.

Responding to the situation, Avon and Somerset Police shared a heartfelt statement from Brenda’s family: “There are no words to describe the pain and devastation which has rippled through our family, friends and the community from the loss of such a remarkable and much-loved woman.”
