Somerset Man Sentenced for Violent Domestic Assault

David Long, a 37-year-old from Summerhedge Crescent, Othery near Bridgwater, appeared in court after violently assaulting his former partner during a dispute fueled by alcohol. The relationship between Long and his ex had been unstable for several years, marked by on-and-off periods.

On January 19 of last year, at his ex-partner’s home near Camborne in Cornwall, a seemingly minor argument escalated into a violent attack. Long punched her multiple times in the face and strangled her, leaving long-lasting physical and emotional scars.

During the sentencing hearing at Truro Crown Court on February 24, details emerged about Long’s background. He is educated and works for his family’s plumbing business but lost control during the incident. He pleaded guilty to causing actual bodily harm.

This was Long’s first court appearance, and aside from his struggles with alcohol, he had maintained a responsible lifestyle. His barrister revealed that Long has been on remand for 17 days and under a 180-day curfew, acknowledging his alcohol addiction and his commitment to rehabilitation. With stable housing and a supportive family network, Long is considered not to pose an ongoing risk and can be managed through community punishments.

Judge Simon Carr addressed Long directly, emphasizing the severity of his alcoholism and the consequences of his actions. “You know what it’s like to spend time at HMP Exeter. I can’t imagine you want to return there,” the judge stated, referring to Long’s previous incarceration.

In sentencing, Judge Carr handed down a 21-month prison term, suspended for two years, coupled with 300 hours of unpaid community work. Additionally, Long was issued a restraining order preventing contact with his former partner and was banned from entering the town of Redruth for ten years.
