A 21-year-old man from Somerset has been sentenced after committing several serious driving offences. Jake King, of Maunder Close, Wincanton, appeared at Swindon Magistrates’ Court on Monday, September 29, following an incident on the A30 near Ludwell on September 27.
King was caught tailgating an unmarked police car while driving a black Audi. After exceeding the speed limit, he dangerously overtook the police vehicle in a 30mph zone. When stopped, King initially refused to provide his details and questioned the officers, saying, “Are we really going to do this?”
Further investigation revealed King was driving without a licence, was disqualified from driving, and was using false registration plates. A Stanley knife was found on the driver’s seat, and the vehicle was deemed unroadworthy due to exposed cords on the front tyres. The car was subsequently seized by police.

PC Hughes of the County Local Policing Tasking Team condemned King’s behaviour, stating, “Despite driving without a licence, insurance, and on false plates, King drove recklessly by overtaking an unmarked police vehicle in a 30mph zone. The possession of a knife adds to the seriousness of his actions. Such criminality has no place in Wiltshire, and we will continue to act firmly against those breaking the law.”
King was handed a five-month jail sentence, suspended for 18 months, and must complete 30 days of rehabilitation activity. The police emphasised their commitment to maintaining road safety and upholding the law.
