Somerset Man Sentenced for Alcohol-Fueled Assault on Ex-Partner

David Long, 37, from Summerhedge Crescent, Othery near Bridgwater, has been sentenced at Truro Crown Court for a violent assault on his ex-partner. The incident, which took place on January 19 last year at his partner’s home near Camborne, Cornwall, involved an alcohol-fueled attack during an argument that escalated without cause.

Long punched his ex several times in the face and strangled her, inflicting lasting physical and emotional harm. Despite his prior clean record, the court heard that Long struggles with alcohol dependency, which played a central role in the offense.

At the hearing on February 24, Long, who works in his father’s plumbing business, admitted guilt to one count of causing actual bodily harm. His barrister highlighted Long’s remorse, his acceptance of his alcohol problem, and his commitment to address it. Long has already spent 17 days on remand and complied with a 180-day curfew. With family support and stable accommodation, he is considered low risk.

Judge Simon Carr acknowledged Long’s struggle with alcoholism and the consequences of his actions. Emphasizing the seriousness of the offence and Long’s need to change, the judge sentenced him to 21 months in prison, suspended for two years, alongside 300 hours of unpaid community work. Additionally, a restraining order was imposed banning contact with his ex and barring him from entering Redruth for the next 10 years.

This case underscores the profound impact of alcohol-related violence and the importance of addressing addiction alongside legal consequences.
