Somerset Man Arrested Following Suspected Racist Attack and Criminal Damage

Police are appealing for the victim of a suspected racist assault to come forward after a man from Somerset was arrested in connection with the incident. The assault reportedly occurred on Saturday, September 27, on Cheap Street in Sherborne, Dorset.

According to Dorset Police, a bystander witnessed a man grab another man by the face while directing verbal abuse at him. The victim is described as a South Asian male in his 30s, with a medium build and height, and short, dark hair.

The suspect, who has been arrested, is accused of making offensive remarks in public and, following his detention, spat inside a police van. Dorset Police confirmed that a 61-year-old man from Templecombe, Somerset, is currently on bail, facing suspicion of racially aggravated assault, racially aggravated public order offenses, and criminal damage.

Police Constable Jasper Beauchamp commented, “Our officers quickly responded to the scene and made an arrest. However, the victim left before we could speak with him. We are eager to hear from this individual to gather his account and advance our investigation.”
