Somerset launched their Vitality Blast campaign in stunning fashion, cruising to a comprehensive seven-wicket victory over Hampshire Hawks under the floodlights at the Cooper Associates Ground. Will Smeed’s dazzling power hitting was the highlight of the match, as the 24-year-old smashed an electrifying 59 off just 29 balls, including four sixes and six fours, to ignite a dominant chase of 159.
Chasing a modest target on a true Taunton pitch, Somerset’s openers set the tone with a rapid 90-run partnership in just 7.3 overs between Smeed and Will Banton. The pair’s aggressive approach effectively dismantled Hampshire’s bowling attack early on. Smeed’s blistering half-century came off a mere 22 balls, highlighted by majestic drives and towering sixes that thrilled the sell-out crowd.
Solidifying the win, brothers James and Thomas Rew combined for an unbroken fourth-wicket partnership of 52 runs, ensuring Somerset sealed the victory with 22 balls to spare. James Rew contributed a confident 47 from 29 deliveries, steering the innings to a comfortable finish.

Somerset’s decision to field first proved pivotal, as seamers Craig Overton and Jake Ball both claimed three wickets apiece with figures of 3-27 and 3-28 respectively. Hampshire were restricted to 158 all out in 19.4 overs, with only captain James Vince making a notable contribution. Vince fought hard with a fiery 58 from 34 balls, including three sixes and four fours, but he received little support from his teammates.
Early breakthroughs from Overton put Hampshire on the back foot, dismissing key batsmen Toby Albert and Joe Weatherley cheaply. Vince’s resistance kept Hampshire in the game for a while, but wickets tumbled at the other end, with Overton and Ball exploiting every opportunity to tighten Somerset’s grip on the match. The visitors’ innings collapsed in the final overs, losing their last five wickets for just 25 runs.
During the chase, Smeed and Banton dominated a high-octane six-over powerplay, punishing extras and spin alike. Smeed’s remarkable timing and power made bowling a challenge, as he dispatched two consecutive free hits over the boundary and mixed elegant cover drives with brute sixes. Although England spinner Liam Dawson briefly halted the flow by removing Banton, Somerset’s experienced Rew brothers calmly wrapped up the innings.
Reflecting on the win, Smeed praised the team’s bowling effort and expressed confidence moving forward. “The bowlers were incredible, especially after the busy red-ball schedule. Getting James Vince out early was a big moment, and batting on a belter of a pitch made it fun. We’re feeling great about the season after this start,” he said.
Somerset’s perfect start to their title defense sets them up strongly for their upcoming clash at Edgbaston against Warwickshire, bolstered by both impressive batting fireworks and disciplined bowling performances.
