Somerset Make Statement with Dominant Victory Over Hampshire in Vitality Blast Opener

Somerset delivered a powerful opening statement to their Vitality Blast campaign with a convincing seven-wicket victory over Hampshire Hawks under the lights at the Cooper Associates Ground.

Chasing a manageable target of 159 on a pitch true to its Taunton reputation, Somerset reached their goal comfortably with 22 balls to spare. The standout performer was 24-year-old Will Smeed, whose breathtaking innings of 59 off just 29 balls included four sixes and six fours. Smeed’s blistering start alongside Will Banton, with an opening partnership of 90 runs in just 7.3 overs, set the tone for a victorious chase.

Brothers James and Thomas Rew then anchored the innings with an unbroken fourth-wicket stand worth 52 runs, ensuring Somerset secured a perfect start to their title defense. James Rew impressed with a lively 47 from 29 deliveries.

Somerset’s decision to field first proved pivotal. Seamers Craig Overton and Jake Ball shared the wickets, finishing with 3-27 and 3-28 respectively, as Hampshire was bowled out for 158 in 19.4 overs. Hampshire’s sole significant contributor was experienced opener James Vince, who scored a robust 58 from 34 balls, featuring three sixes and four fours.

Hampshire hoped to rebound after a dismal start to their Championship campaign, seeking revenge against the defending champions who had bested them in last season’s final. But Somerset, buoyed by a packed home crowd, took full control after winning the toss.

Overton provided early breakthroughs, dismissing dangerous batsman Toby Albert for 23 and soon after Joe Weatherley, reducing Hampshire to 58-2. Vince held firm with aggressive strokeplay, but wickets fell regularly around him. Lewis Goldsworthy dismissed Hilton Cartwright, and Overton returned to claim Tom Prest.

The crucial wicket of Vince came when he was caught at extra cover after a fierce knock. From 113-5, Hampshire’s innings unravelled quickly as Daniel Sams and Ball took multiple wickets, including dismissing key players such as Liam Dawson and Scott Currie in quick succession.

With Hampshire folding for 158, Somerset’s chase was well within reach. The opening duo of Banton and Smeed dominated the powerplay, amassing 74 runs in just six overs. Smeed, in particular, inflicted heavy punishment, sending two free hits over the boundary and accumulating 21 runs in one over with excellent timing.

Smeed reached his fifty off a mere 22 balls, electrifying the crowd with a spectacular cover drive. Although Banton was eventually dismissed by England spinner Liam Dawson, Smeed continued to keep Somerset ahead until he was caught in the deep off Scott Currie.

James Rew and Tom Abell took charge in the later stages, scoring calmly and efficiently. Despite a late wicket from Currie breaking the partnership, the Rew brothers steadied the innings to guide Somerset to a comfortable victory.

Reflecting on the win, Smeed praised the bowlers and the team’s overall performance. “We couldn’t have asked for a better start. The bowlers were outstanding, especially after the busy recent schedule. It was great fun batting on such a flat pitch, and facing strong bowling in the Championship has really helped me develop. With this performance, we head to Edgbaston full of confidence.”

Somerset’s emphatic win sends a clear message to their opponents as they begin their campaign defending the Vitality Blast title.
