Somerset Maintain Focus Amid Impressive County Championship Surge

Somerset captain Tom Abell emphasizes the importance of staying grounded following the team’s strong early performance in the Rothesay County Championship.

Currently leading Division One by 15 points after securing two wins and a draw in their opening three games, Somerset are chasing the coveted County Championship crown for the first time in the county’s history.

Abell’s unbeaten century was pivotal in Somerset’s thrilling two-wicket victory against Hampshire at the Utilita Bowl on Monday. His masterful 101 anchored a tense chase of 288 runs in a match filled with fluctuating momentum. Though Hampshire’s Sonny Baker delivered an impressive third five-wicket haul of his career, Abell’s composure ensured Somerset clinched both the win and his personal milestone simultaneously.

Reflecting on the match, Abell said, “We’ve always faced tough contests against Hampshire, especially here at the Utilita Bowl. The game swung back and forth throughout.

“Today, it was about respecting the situation and choosing the right moments to score. Pressure is part of the game, and managing it is key. It was a great feeling to cross the finish line, making for a positive start to the season.

“Throughout the innings, I played a supporting role with strong partnerships helping to chip away at the target. Hampshire’s bowling was exceptional, making scoring difficult. They didn’t let us build momentum quickly, so patience was essential. I’m glad we held firm and got over the line.

“I always want to perform well. Having two centuries and several good starts is encouraging. It’s about reading the situation and giving my best.

“The fact that we have two wins and a draw shows the group effort. The team spirit in the dressing room is outstanding.

“We’ve faced challenging opponents early on, so to compete and succeed like this is very promising. There are positive signs, but this is just the beginning.”
