Somerset Keeps Focus Amid Impressive County Championship Start

Somerset captain Tom Abell has urged his team to remain grounded despite their promising start to the Rothesay County Championship season.

Aiming to claim the coveted County Championship for the first time in the club’s history, Somerset find themselves comfortably atop the Division One table with a 15-point lead, following two victories and a draw from their opening three games.

Abell’s unbeaten century was instrumental in Somerset’s nail-biting two-wicket victory over Hampshire at the Utilita Bowl on Monday. His flawless 101 guided the team through a tense chase of 288 runs in a match that swung unpredictably.

Sonny Baker’s third career five-wicket haul added to the drama, making the final stages extremely close. Yet, Abell’s calm under pressure ensured both the match win and his century as he carefully paced the innings.

“We always face tough contests against Hampshire, and the Utilita Bowl has been a challenging venue for us,” Abell reflected. “The game ebbed and flowed throughout. It was important to be patient, remain respectful, and pick the right moments to score. Pressure builds in those situations, and managing it was key. Getting the win feels fantastic and is a great boost to start the season.”

He praised his teammates for their contributions, saying, “I took a back seat at times, building partnerships that chipped away at the target. Our bowlers were phenomenal, making scoring difficult for the opposition and not letting them pull away. We had to stay focused and patient throughout, and I’m proud we saw it through.”

Abell has now compiled two centuries and several promising starts this season, highlighting his ability to tailor his performance to the match situation. “You don’t achieve two wins and a draw without everyone playing well and an excellent team spirit in the dressing room,” he added.

Despite the strong results, Abell cautioned that the season is far from over. “We have faced some tough matches early on, so competing as we have is very encouraging,” he noted. “There are positive signs, but this is only the beginning.”
