Somerset have confirmed that pace bowler Alfie Ogborne will miss the remainder of the County Championship season, with young batter Thomas Rew also facing a significant injury layoff. Ahead of Thursday’s Championship resumption, head coach Jason Kerr gave a detailed injury report on the squad’s current status.
With six games left to play, Somerset are chasing their first County Championship title. The Cidermen currently sit second in the table, five points behind leaders Nottinghamshire, in a tightly contested top six separated by just 11 points. Their upcoming fixtures include home matches against Essex, Glamorgan, and Surrey, as well as away trips to Sussex, Leicestershire, and Yorkshire.

Alfie Ogborne – Lower Back Stress Fracture Ogborne, who has taken 14 wickets this season, has sustained a stress fracture in his lower back, ruling him out for the rest of the campaign. Kerr expressed disappointment at the setback, highlighting Ogborne’s significant efforts over winter and his positive impact when fit. He is now focused on rehabilitation to be ready for next season.
Thomas Rew – Ankle Ligament Injury Rew has impressed this season with 409 runs in three matches, including two centuries and an average of 81.80. His campaign has been interrupted after injuring ankle ligaments in a collision with an advertising board. Surgery is not required, and although there is a slim possibility he could return before the season ends, the coaching team considers this unlikely. Emphasis remains on thorough rehabilitation without time pressure.
Additional injury updates include:
Tom Banton – Thigh Injury Banton has re-injured a thigh muscle sustained at Finals Day and is diligently undergoing rehab. He aims to be fit for the international white ball series in September.
Fin Hill – Hamstring Surgery Hill is making positive progress following major hamstring surgery. Initially ruled out for the rest of the year, his commitment to recovery has been exemplary. The focus remains on meeting all medical milestones to prepare for a potential winter training stint abroad, with no expectations for a summer return.
Somerset’s medical and coaching staff continue to monitor player recoveries closely as they prepare for a crucial final phase in their pursuit of the County Championship title.
