Plans to build 230 new homes and commercial space on Parsonage Farm near Watchet in Somerset have sparked strong opposition from local residents and campaign groups. Critics warn the development could lead to the permanent loss of valuable farmland and fail to address the true housing needs of the community.
The Wyndham Estate announced its initial proposals in October 2023 for the site along B3191 Brendon Road, close to the historic St. Decuman’s Well and the former Watchet Musical Festival grounds. Revised plans maintain the same scale, including access roads, commercial units, and a mix of housing ranging from one-bedroom flats to four-bedroom houses, 35% of which will be “affordable” homes.
Around 80 residents attended a recent town council environment and planning meeting to voice their concerns, holding placards with slogans such as “no farms, no food” and “brownfield before greenfield.” The Parsonage Farm Action Group emphasized the importance of preserving farmland to secure local food production and maintain vital community services like schools and roads.

Local leaders, including Liz McGrath of Base for Life Watchet, criticized the development for potentially prioritizing executive-style homes over genuinely affordable housing that matches local wages and rental costs.
Watchet faces substantial housing growth, with ongoing projects like the Liddymore Park development and approved plans for Normandy Avenue supplementing current proposals. Meanwhile, the Wyndham Estate is also advancing housing in nearby Williton, including the Orchard Brooks site.
MP Rachel Gilmour pledged support for safeguarding farmland at the national level, highlighting recent discussions with government officials about local infrastructure and farmland preservation.
The town council placed a “holding objection” on the plans, postponing detailed approval until more information is available. Somerset Council’s planning committee is expected to make the final decision on the Parsonage Farm development in spring 2026, considering input from the public and local stakeholders.
