Somerset’s 136-year wait for a County Championship title looks set to continue unless fortune swings their way in the final round of this season’s competition. Established in 1890, Somerset remains one of just three counties yet to claim the coveted trophy. Having topped the table with two matches remaining, recent setbacks have complicated their pursuit of a maiden title.
In their latest outing, Somerset appeared poised for a crucial victory. Leading Yorkshire in their second innings by just 65 runs after Yorkshire were 54-6, the Cidermen seemed on course. However, a resilient 176-run partnership between George Hill and Dom Bess triggered a collapse from Somerset, who were chasing 287 but fell from 60-2 to 101 all out. This reversal, combined with Warwickshire’s comprehensive victory over Essex, means Warwickshire now lead heading into the final round, firmly positioned to claim their first title since 2021.
Warwickshire start the last fixtures 11 points ahead. A win at home against Leicestershire would secure them the championship. Even a draw, yielding six bonus points, should suffice regardless of Somerset’s or Nottinghamshire’s results. Should Somerset win, their fate depends on Warwickshire dropping points or Nottinghamshire failing to capitalise, making Somerset’s prospects challenging.

Somerset Head Coach Jason Kerr acknowledged the uphill task, saying, “We’ve got nothing to lose now. Last week at Headingley was disappointing, but we know exactly what we need to do for the final match – a comprehensive victory. We’ll hope for a little help elsewhere, but our focus is firmly on controlling what we can. The players are resilient and determined, and playing at home in front of our supporters is a great opportunity.”
Though Somerset have never won the County Championship, they have finished as runners-up six times since 2001 and secured third place in the past two seasons. Past final-day heartbreaks still linger; in 2010, a draw against Durham and Nottinghamshire’s rain-aided late surge denied Somerset the title. Then in 2016, despite a strong position, a dramatic final-hour collapse dashed their hopes.
Somerset’s recent matches have featured memorable encounters, including a thrilling victory over Surrey at the County Ground secured by Jack Leach’s final over heroics. Yet, previous successes have not yet culminated in a championship win.
As the season reaches its climax, Somerset’s faithful remain hopeful that after more than a century of trials, this could be the year their long-standing championship drought ends.
