Somerset Historic Villages Secure Future Through New Development Plan

Bath & North East Somerset Council has officially approved the High Littleton and Hallatrow Neighbourhood Development Plan (NDP), setting a clear framework for future development and land use in the parish, which includes two historic villages in the Cam Valley.

This comprehensive plan focuses on sustainable development, housing, transportation, heritage preservation, environmental protection, and enhancement of community facilities. It will serve as a key reference for the Local Planning Authority when assessing planning applications within the area.

On 1 May, a referendum was held to decide on adopting the NDP. With a voter turnout of 34.7%, an overwhelming 88.79% voted in favor, validating strong community support for the plan’s implementation.

Councillor Matt McCabe emphasized the significance of the plan: “Neighbourhood Development Plans empower communities to shape local planning decisions that reflect their priorities. The High Littleton and Hallatrow NDP underwent extensive community consultation, and I am grateful to all participants. This plan now forms part of the council’s statutory development strategy, providing a robust framework for future residential and commercial proposals in the parish.”

The NDP focuses on three main themes:

  • Encouraging sustainable housing development that meets local needs
  • Enhancing transport infrastructure, including improved pedestrian safety and reduced congestion
  • Preserving the parish’s natural and historic environment while supporting community amenities

Additional initiatives within the plan include the commitment to maintain and improve community facilities, expand allotments, and support the creation of a community-led Environmental Action Plan.

Simon Gould from High Littleton and Hallatrow Parish Council stated, “This plan will shape our parish’s future, balancing growth with the protection of our rural landscape and environment. I extend my thanks to the dedicated volunteers and residents whose input during consultations strengthened the plan and ensured it reflects our community’s vision.”
