Hedgehogs have long held a special place in children’s stories, fairy tales, and rural culture, especially here in Somerset. Their charming, harmless nature makes them beloved creatures, but many face grave dangers in our modern world.
Every year, thousands of hedgehogs are found injured, neglected, or close to death. Increasing traffic and habitat loss put these small mammals at even greater risk, making rescue and rehabilitation efforts more critical than ever.
Somerset’s animal lovers may soon lose one of their most dedicated wildlife charities. Prickles Hedgehog Rescue, based in Cheddar and operating since 2007, is on the brink of closure due to severe financial difficulties.

Run entirely by devoted volunteers, Prickles has saved thousands of hedgehogs by providing essential care and rehabilitation. Until recently, the charity supplemented its income through a shop in Union Street, Cheddar, but after selling the shop, funding has become insufficient to cover rising veterinary bills and daily running costs.
Now located at Wessex Business Park in Cheddar, Prickles faces shutting down as early as September if new funding or retail support is not found. The charity’s recent Facebook announcement about their crisis has sparked concern and calls for help from local animal enthusiasts.
Amanda Pressland, a passionate animal lover, highlighted the charity’s impact: “Since 2007, Prickles has cared for over 8,000 hedgehogs and spent £107,000 last year alone on vital treatment, rehabilitation, and release. Losing the shop threatens this invaluable work unless a new retail space can be secured urgently.”
This situation speaks volumes about local compassion, wildlife conservation, and community spirit. The charity is actively seeking assistance, especially to find a new shop location to help sustain its operations.
Anyone able to help or interested in supporting this vital cause is encouraged to reach out to Prickles founder Jules Bishop at [email protected].
