In a remarkable display of determination and generosity, 90-year-old Mary Nicholson from Burnham-on-Sea successfully completed the entire 97-mile length of Hadrian’s Wall to raise funds for the NHS. Mary’s incredible effort raised more than £8,500 for the Beacon Centre at Musgrove Park Hospital, where her brother Peter is undergoing treatment.
Inspired by the exceptional care her brother received, Mary explained her motivation: “Following the outstanding treatment for my brother, Peter, at the Beacon Centre and from colorectal surgeon Mr Paul Mackey, I decided to walk Hadrian’s Wall to support Musgrove Park Hospital’s cancer services.”
The trek was far from easy. While the initial days offered relatively flat terrain, Mary and her family soon faced steep hills and rocky paths. “The most challenging part was on days five and six. We expected an 11-mile walk but found it was actually 15 miles. My legs were aching, and it was tough going, especially in the heat,” she recalled.

Despite severe arthritis in her knees and moments when giving up seemed tempting, Mary’s unwavering faith and determination kept her moving forward. “There were many times I wanted to stop due to the physical strain, but my faith pushed me onward. I’m proud I managed to complete it!”
Mary, a retired midwife, was accompanied by her daughters, youngest son, and grandchildren on the eight-day journey, though she proudly set the pace for the group. “It was thoughts of my brother and the excellent care he received at the Beacon Centre that kept me motivated,” she said. “The hike included stony paths and wooden stiles, making it quite challenging, but I led the way.”
To prepare, Mary walked daily along Burnham beach and Brean Down. She started her journey on 25 April with confidence, only to find the walk far more demanding than anticipated. “I thought, ‘This is going to be a piece of cake,’ but it was much tougher. Still, I’m so glad I did it.”
On 18 August, a special cheque presentation ceremony was held to celebrate Mary’s fundraising achievement, marking a heartfelt tribute to her courage and dedication.
