Somerset Garden Fire Rapidly Spreads, Damages Two Homes in Chard

A garden fire in Chard swiftly escalated on Sunday, May 25, around 4:30 pm, leading to the evacuation of residents and significant damage to two homes. The Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service received initial reports from local residents about a blaze in a garden located in the town center.

Upon arrival, firefighters quickly realized the severity of the situation as the fire spread to two adjoining properties. Additional fire engines were dispatched from Crewkerne, Yeovil, and Charmouth to support the initial Chard crew.

Firefighters faced particular concern regarding a propane cylinder removed from one of the properties. Equipped with breathing apparatus, hose reel jets, a thermal imaging camera, and a gas monitor, the team worked diligently to extinguish the flames and cool the cylinder, ensuring it posed no further risk.

The operation brought the fire under control steadily, and all occupants were accounted for and checked over as a safety precaution. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Damage assessment revealed that the first, end-terrace house—where the fire began in a kitchen—suffered 100% smoke damage. The neighboring home sustained approximately 25% fire damage and 50% smoke damage.

The firefighting efforts concluded around 10:15 pm, after which responsibility for the properties was handed back to the residents. They are now awaiting assistance from their housing authority for boarding up and repairs to these socially rented homes.
