A grassroots football match in Somerset was abandoned after Chew Magna FC players walked off the pitch in protest against alleged homophobic abuse. The incident occurred yesterday afternoon, Saturday, September 27, during a Somerset County League Division 3 game against Axbridge United FC.
The match, held at Chew Magna’s Monty Tucker Clubhouse near Clutton, was halted at halftime when a Chew Magna player reportedly faced a homophobic slur. In response, the entire Chew Magna first team unanimously decided to leave the field, demonstrating their zero tolerance for abuse of any kind.
A club spokesperson emphasized, “There is no place for abuse of any kind in football!” and reaffirmed the team’s commitment to supporting diversity within the club.

The Somerset County Football League has confirmed that the incident has been formally reported to the Somerset FA, which is now conducting an official investigation. The League’s Board of Directors expressed their sadness over the incident and reiterated their dedication to making football an inclusive sport. They stated, “Discrimination of any kind has no place in our game.” Axbridge United FC has not commented on the matter at this time.
This event underscores the ongoing challenges facing football regarding discrimination. Recently, the national charity Kick It Out launched a five-year strategy to combat rising hate speech and promote inclusivity. Its chief executive, Samuel Okafor, highlighted the increasing incidents of online and stadium-based abuse targeted at women, LGBTQ+ individuals, ethnic minorities, and disabled communities within football. He urged football institutions to unite and foster a welcoming environment where people from all backgrounds can safely play, support, and work in the game.
