The Somerset County Football League is investigating an allegation of homophobic abuse during a match between Chew Magna FC and Axbridge United FC on Saturday, September 27. The match, part of the Division 3 league, was abandoned at half-time following reports that a Chew Magna player was subjected to a homophobic slur.
The incident occurred at Chew Magna’s home ground near Clutton and was promptly referred to the Somerset Football Association for a formal investigation.
A spokesperson for the Somerset County Football League expressed disappointment over the incident, stating: “The Board of Directors are saddened by the abandonment of the match due to an alleged homophobic remark aimed at a Chew Magna player. We have reported this matter to Somerset FA, who are now investigating. The League stands firmly against discrimination in all forms and is committed to making football inclusive for everyone.”

Chew Magna FC noted the team’s unanimous decision to leave the pitch in response to the abuse, emphasizing that “there is no place for abuse of any kind in football.”
Axbridge United has declined to comment at this time. The league has stated that no further remarks will be made until the investigation concludes.
