Somerset head coach Jason Kerr has urged his team to remain grounded and not look too far ahead as they prepare to face Sussex in today’s County Championship Division One match at Hove.
Following an impressive eight-wicket victory over Essex at Taunton on Sunday, Somerset have strengthened their bid for a first-ever County Championship title. The team currently sits second in the Division One standings, trailing leaders Nottinghamshire by two points and holding a three-point advantage over third-placed Warwickshire.
Reflecting on the win against Essex, Kerr said, “It was a great performance. It was important that we started well on the return to red-ball cricket, and we did exactly that. I thought we were excellent throughout the four days and to get the win was huge. That gives us confidence going down to Hove.”

He acknowledged Sussex’s quality and recalled a previous disappointing outing at the Hove ground: “Sussex are a good team and the last time we were at Hove it was a disappointing performance, so we need to make sure that we travel well and make sure that we try and build on momentum from the Essex result.”
Kerr emphasised the importance of focusing on their own game rather than external factors. “There’s only so many things you can control in sport, so it’s important that we don’t get too far ahead of ourselves. What we need to do is keep playing really good cricket, and if we do that, it’ll be exciting to see where we are in a month’s time.”
Somerset will be without several players due to injury, including Tom Kohler-Cadmore (thumb), Alfie Ogborne (back), Thomas Rew (ankle) and Fin Hill (hamstring), as they take on Sussex at Hove.
