Somerset head coach Jason Kerr has emphasised the importance of focusing on the immediate challenge as his side prepares to face Sussex in their County Championship Division One fixture at Hove today.
The Somerset team bolstered their title aspirations with an impressive eight-wicket victory over Essex at Taunton last Sunday. This win has propelled them to second place in the Division One standings, just two points behind leaders Nottinghamshire and three points clear of third-placed Warwickshire.
Reflecting on the triumph against Essex, Kerr said: “It was a fantastic performance. Starting strongly on the return to red-ball cricket was crucial, and we delivered just that. Our consistency over all four days was outstanding, and securing the win has really boosted our confidence ahead of the trip to Hove.”

Looking ahead to the match against Sussex, he acknowledged the challenge presented by their opponents. “Sussex are a strong side, and our previous outing at Hove was below our expectations. We need to ensure we travel well and build on the momentum from our recent success.”
Kerr also highlighted the importance of staying grounded amid the competitive season. “In sports, there are only so many factors you can control, so it’s vital we don’t get ahead of ourselves. Our focus must remain on playing high-quality cricket. If we maintain that standard, it will be exciting to see where we stand in a month’s time.”
Somerset will be without several players due to injury, including Tom Kohler-Cadmore (thumb), Alfie Ogborne (back), Thomas Rew (ankle), and Fin Hill (hamstring) for this fixture.
