Gareth Penn, a dedicated fitness instructor from Yeovil, Somerset, has earned international recognition as one of the strongest men in the world. Competing at the World Strongest Man (Natural) competition in Galway, Ireland, Gareth secured an impressive fifth-place finish in a highly competitive field.
The event, held over two days at Galway University, featured seven grueling challenges designed to test raw strength and endurance, all without the use of performance-enhancing drugs. Instead, competitors rely on disciplined strength training and strict nutrition, making Gareth’s accomplishment even more commendable.
Competing in the masters category against athletes from across the globe, Gareth, who is among the eldest participants, showcased remarkable resilience and technique. The challenges included events such as a floor-to-overhead lift—where Gareth claimed third place with a 130kg press—a 300kg yoke carry over 30 meters, and ascending three 16-inch steps while carrying a 200kg T-bar.

Other demanding tests involved swiftly handling a 120kg sandbag and tossing sandbags weighing between 16 and 24 kilograms over a 4-meter bar. These tasks required not just brute strength but also agility and stamina.
Before dedicating himself full-time to fitness, Gareth had a diverse athletic background, participating in motor racing and rugby. He also spent 18 years as an avionics electrician before following his passion to establish his own strength and conditioning gym. Together with his wife Linsay, he operates GMP Fitness at the Oxford Road trading estate in Yeovil.
Reflecting on the competition, Gareth said, “The World Strongest Man (Natural) event was incredibly tough, especially facing competitors from America, Australia, and Europe. But I gave it my all and am proud to have represented my country, finishing fifth in the world at my first appearance.”
Gareth’s achievement stands as a testament to his dedication and the growing prominence of natural strength sports worldwide.
