Firefighters in Somerset have been widely praised for their swift and effective response to a wildfire that threatened residential areas near Norton Fitzwarren. On Friday, 21 August, Taunton Fire Station’s Blue Watch along with on-call firefighters were dispatched to tackle a rapidly spreading fire affecting multiple fields and hedgerows near Pen Elm Hill, close to the historic hill fort.
The operation saw support from neighbouring fire stations, which provided specialist fire appliances and off-road vehicles to navigate the terrain. Despite severe damage to crops over a vast area, crews worked diligently to prevent the flames from reaching nearby homes.
A spokesperson from Taunton Fire Station stated, “Crews worked hard to protect properties nearby.” Authorities are treating the blaze as suspected arson, with Avon and Somerset Police appealing for witnesses. A police spokesperson commented, “At this early stage, pending further enquiries, we are treating this incident as suspicious.”

The fire crews received an outpouring of gratitude on social media from local residents appreciative of their quick and courageous actions. Elsie Roulston expressed, “A big thank you from all the residents in the adjacent properties. So thankful for your swift response.” Similarly, Beryl Hummell commented, “A big thank you to our firefighters,” while Emma Daniel added, “Oh no, this is heartbreaking. I’m glad it got controlled before it got near the houses.” Rhiannon Piper also stated, “Thank you so much for your wonderful response and work. We are all grateful.”
The fire service continues to investigate the cause of the fire as the community recovers from the incident, valuing the critical efforts made by emergency teams to safeguard both lives and properties.
