Firefighters in Somerset successfully prevented a wildfire from reaching residential homes after responding swiftly to a fast-moving blaze on Friday, 21 August. The fire, which broke out across several fields and hedgerows near the historic hill fort at Norton Fitzwarren, prompted a rapid mobilisation of resources from Taunton Fire Station’s Blue Watch and on-call personnel.
Additional support was provided by neighbouring stations, which sent specialist appliances and off-road vehicles to assist in containing the fire. Photographs from the scene reveal extensive damage to crops and show firefighters actively battling the flames to halt their progression towards nearby houses.
A spokesperson for Taunton Fire Station praised the efforts of the teams, stating, “Crews worked hard to protect properties nearby.”

Avon and Somerset Police are currently treating the fire at Pen Elm Hill as a suspected arson, appealing for anyone with information to come forward. A police spokesperson explained, “At this early stage, pending further enquiries, we are treating this incident as suspicious.”
