Somerset head coach Jason Kerr described the conclusion of the season as a “disappointing end,” but emphasized that it did not overshadow what has been an “incredible year” for the team.
After being bowled out for 99 on Friday, Somerset faced Essex at Chelmsford, where the hosts chased down the target by scoring 99 for three in just 18.1 overs on Saturday, securing a decisive victory.
Despite the defeat, Somerset finished third in the County Championship, trailing only champions Nottinghamshire and runners-up Surrey. The team also reached the semi-finals of the One-Day Cup and triumphed in the Vitality Blast tournament, highlighting their strong overall performance this season.

Reflecting on the loss to Essex, Kerr said, “It’s been frustrating. I told the players it’s a disappointing way to end the season. Friday’s batting performance ultimately cost us the match. However, this doesn’t diminish the exceptional progress and achievements we’ve made this year.
“This season has featured remarkable performances and memorable victories. Unfortunately, there were moments, including the second and third games in April and that brief period on Friday, where things quickly unraveled and impacted our title chances.
“The conditions changed dramatically when the cloud cover rolled in. Many expected the game to end in a draw, but the pitch, which had been quite benign, transformed under the cloud cover. We failed to adjust effectively and didn’t bat well enough. The pitch was not typical of one where a third-innings total of 99 all out is expected.”
