Somerset Faces New 20-Hour Met Office Weather Warning

The Met Office has issued a 20-hour yellow weather warning for parts of Somerset, signaling heavy rain and potential flooding from Monday evening, January 26, through Tuesday afternoon, January 27.

Forecasters predict intense downpours during this period, which will fall on already saturated ground, increasing the risk of flooding to homes, properties, and rural communities. Some areas may become temporarily isolated as roads flood, with spray and standing water creating hazardous driving conditions. Delays or cancellations on train and bus services are also possible.

Starting Monday evening, bands of heavy rain will sweep across the South West, with some locations expected to receive up to 80mm of rainfall. This comes on the heels of Storm Ingrid, which struck the region on Friday, January 23, bringing strong winds reaching 60 mph and torrential rain. The additional rainfall next week is likely to exacerbate existing flood risks.

Current conditions remain unsettled, with heavy showers and strong winds continuing into the weekend. Showers may include hail and lightning, with temperatures ranging from a minimum of 3 °C overnight to a maximum of 10 °C during the day. Sunday will see persistent rain and showers with occasional bright spells and lighter winds.

Looking ahead to the start of the week, Monday begins dry but cloud and rain will soon spread from the west. Tuesday is expected to be wet and windy, with coastal gales affecting the region, before conditions gradually improve from the north by Wednesday. Chilly weather will persist as the system clears.

Residents and businesses are advised to prepare for potential flooding and exercise caution when traveling during these unsettled weather conditions.
