Somerset’s title defense in the T20 Blast takes a hit as two key players, Will Smeed and Tom Lammonby, are ruled out for their upcoming match against Glamorgan on Friday night. This adds to an already troubled injury list that includes Tom Kohler-Cadmore.
Will Smeed, who impressed with a 59-run contribution in Somerset’s opening victory over Hampshire and scored 94 in last year’s final, has been sidelined due to a broken hand. Tom Lammonby, who has taken the new ball and opened the bowling in both matches so far, is out with an elbow injury.
In response to these setbacks, Somerset has bolstered their squad with promising newcomers. Archie Vaughan, who has yet to make his T20 debut but has been opening for the Second XI, has been added alongside pace bowlers Josh Shaw and Alfie Ogborne. Ogborne returns after duties with the England Lions but has also yet to appear in T20 matches for Somerset.

Somerset’s campaign has begun strongly, with dominant seven-wicket wins against both Hampshire and Warwickshire. Meanwhile, Glamorgan have faced defeats in their initial two games.
Head Coach Jason Kerr expressed his pride in the team’s start and outlined the challenge ahead: “I’m thoroughly delighted with the start to our title defense. It’s been two comprehensive performances, but as always in T20 cricket, there’s areas where you want to improve game to game. We’ve been working on a couple of things this week and we’re looking forward to the opportunity against Glamorgan.
“Glamorgan are a strong side with individual match-winners. Every side that we come across has good players and Glamorgan are no different. They’ve had a couple of exciting games themselves, and I’m sure they’re looking forward to taking us on. Hopefully, we can go there, put in a performance and bring some points away.
“Unfortunately, Will Smeed’s out after he sustained a broken hand up at Edgbaston. So, inevitably, there’ll be a change at the top.”
Vaughan is expected to step in at the top of the order in Smeed’s absence. Meanwhile, Lammonby’s position could be filled by Josh Thomas if Somerset opts for a second spinner or seeks a like-for-like replacement batting at number six. Ogborne or Shaw may also be introduced to strengthen the bowling attack. Despite these changes, Somerset’s batting depth remains solid; Lewis Goldsworthy, typically a top-order batsman in longer formats but batting at number 10 in the first two T20 games, has not shown any shortage of depth in the lineup.
