Somerset is considering a promising opportunity for 18-year-old Thomas Rew to make his first-class debut against Yorkshire in the upcoming County Championship match starting Friday. With several key batsmen sidelined due to injuries, the younger Rew has been named in a 14-man squad, creating an opening in the team.
Thomas, who is currently preparing for his A-Level exams scheduled between May 11 and June 18, has yet to play in the County Championship. However, his availability comes at a crucial time, with Somerset’s senior batters Tom Kohler-Cadmore (thumb), Tom Banton (finger), and Lewis Goldsworthy (hamstring) all ruled out. This nod to Thomas may also impact his older brother James Rew’s role, potentially allowing James to move up the batting order as an opener.
James Rew ranks third among the highest run-scorers in this season’s County Championship, trailing only Surrey’s Jamie Smith and Nottinghamshire’s Joe Clarke. With an impressive average of 75, James is gaining attention as a strong candidate for England’s Test squad, especially as the top-order position looks uncertain following Zak Crawley’s recent form struggles. Though James has not previously opened for Somerset, if Thomas assumes wicketkeeping duties, James could feasibly take on the opener’s role, something few players manage alongside keeping duties.

Somerset’s head coach, Jason Kerr, emphasized the team’s focus and adaptability ahead of the match. “It’s been a really productive week off, giving us a chance to refresh and train well. We’ve adapted excellently to different pitches and shown strong team performances,” Kerr said. He acknowledged Yorkshire’s strength but stressed the importance of concentrating on Somerset’s own game plan.
In addition to Thomas Rew, South African pacer Miguel Pretorious and seamer Josh Shaw have been included in the squad, joining the 11 players who secured a win against Hampshire in the last fixture. Somerset currently sits second on the County Championship table—just one point behind Warwickshire but with a game in hand—while Yorkshire remains winless and at the bottom of the standings.
Yorkshire will welcome the experienced Joe Root back for this match, although teammate Harry Brook will be rested and unavailable.
