Somerset Eyes Second Place Finish in County Championship with One Win

Somerset will conclude their successful 2025 season with a crucial County Championship match against Essex. A victory for Somerset combined with a Surrey defeat would secure them second place in the table.

Earlier this month, Somerset clinched the Vitality T20 Blast title by defeating Hampshire, marking their second T20 triumph in three years and highlighting another fruitful season for the Cidermen.

Despite this success, the elusive County Championship crown remains out of reach. Nottinghamshire appear set to secure the championship, requiring only a win against Warwickshire at Trent Bridge to clinch the title. Surrey still possess a slim chance, needing to defeat relegation-threatened Hampshire and rely on Nottinghamshire faltering against Warwickshire. While Somerset cannot claim the top spot, securing second place is firmly within their reach.

Head coach Jason Kerr emphasized the team’s ambitions ahead of the final game: “We want to end the season on a high. We’ve played some really good cricket this year and want to finish as high up the table as possible to carry momentum into next year. Winning consistently helps build strong habits, so mentally and physically, we need to be ready. This last game is our opportunity to give it everything and finish positively.”

Kerr acknowledged the challenge ahead, noting, “Essex are a strong side with plenty still to play for. We respect them but will do everything we can over these four days to get the right result.”

Adding to the team’s stability, Tom Kohler-Cadmore has committed his future to Somerset by signing a multi-format contract extension through 2027. Since joining the County in 2023, the 31-year-old has played 50 Vitality Blast matches, scoring 1,432 runs at an average of 31.82, including a top score of 90. In First Class cricket, he has played 22 matches and amassed 1,398 runs at an impressive 39.94 average, highlighted by an unbeaten 147.

A former Wisden Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year and England Lions player, Kohler-Cadmore earned his first England ODI call-up in 2023. Known for his powerful batting, he boasts a T20 strike rate of 140.33 and played a vital role in Somerset’s 2023 and 2025 Vitality Blast title wins.

Reflecting on his extension, Tom said, “I’ve really enjoyed my time with Somerset and love everything about the Club. It’s a privilege to contribute to the team’s success and be part of such a special culture. The support from Members and fans is incredible, and I look forward to giving them even more to cheer in the coming years.”

Somerset Director of Cricket Andy Hurry praised Kohler-Cadmore’s contributions: “Tom is widely regarded as one of the most destructive batters in the game and is highly sought after in global franchise cricket. He has proven his quality on and off the field during his time with us. Our Members and supporters will be excited to see him continue representing Somerset for the next several seasons.”
