Craig Overton delivered a masterful all-round performance to guide Somerset to a commanding 10-wicket victory over Essex in the County Championship, wrapping up the match with more than four sessions to spare.
Standing in as captain for the injured Lewis Gregory, Overton led by example across all facets of the game. He recorded his second career century as the top scorer, claimed four crucial wickets, took a sharp catch, and made a pivotal decision to bat first after winning the toss on a green-tinged pitch.
The 32-year-old former England seamer shattered Essex’s hopes early on day three, swiftly removing two set batters, Matt Critchley and Paul Walter, after they combined for a promising 96-run partnership. Trailing by 199 runs from the first innings, Essex struggled to regain footing.

Chasing a modest target of 47, Somerset wrapped up the win in just 15 minutes and 5.4 overs, racing to victory with a flurry of boundaries.
Injury substitute Archie Vaughan, determined to make a mark after missing much of the season, was particularly aggressive. He blasted 19 runs off a five-ball over from Sam Cook and launched two sixes over mid-wicket off Simon Harmer, finishing with an impressive 41 from 25 balls.
Somerset’s matchday lineup was heavily impacted by injuries, forcing two injury substitutions during the game. Lewis Goldsworthy exited with a hamstring tweak, and Tom Kohler-Cadmore was sidelined by a bruised thumb earlier in the match. Will Smeed was called up from a second-team fixture, while Vaughan became Somerset’s thirteenth player in attendance.
Vaughan’s impact was immediate, taking a sharp low catch at second slip to dismiss Critchley just fifteen balls into the innings. Though Critchley had appeared to steady Essex’s innings, Somerset’s bowlers quickly regained control on a pitch that appeared to flatten out on day two.
Paul Walter followed soon after, caught and bowled by Overton for just nine runs added to his overnight score. Overton finished his morning spell with figures of 2 for 14 from five overs.
Essex’s slide continued as Michael Pepper was caught off Jake Ball’s bowling, thanks to Overton’s sharp slip catch. The visitors, still trailing by seven runs, saw their resistance crumble when Wiaan Mulder’s valiant innings ended with a misjudged hook shot off Migael Pretorius.
Overton’s only minor error came when he dropped Shane Snater on four runs, a rare lapse that did little to affect Somerset’s dominance.
Simon Harmer fought briefly in the lower order but was eventually trapped lbw by Josh Shaw. The ninth-wicket pair of Shane Snater and Sam Cook managed to eke out some runs before Pretorius took the final wicket, finishing with 3 for 64.
Somerset’s emphatic victory under new captain Overton’s leadership sees them rise to the summit of the County Championship early in the season, setting a confident tone for the challenges ahead.
