Somerset Crush Northamptonshire to Set Up Final Day Showdown

Somerset delivered a powerful performance to keep their Vitality Blast quarter-final aspirations firmly on track, overpowering group leaders Northamptonshire Steelbacks by seven wickets at Taunton.

After losing the toss, Northamptonshire posted a modest total of 162 for eight. Lewis McManus was the standout performer for the visitors, scoring a career-best 76 off just 43 balls, with seven fours and four sixes. However, Somerset bowlers, led by Daniel Sams who took three wickets for 16 runs in four overs, applied disciplined pressure to restrict the Steelbacks.

In response, Somerset chased down the target emphatically, reaching 164 for three with five overs to spare. Openers Will Smeed and Thomas Rew ignited the innings with explosive batting, each scoring 46 runs off 20 balls. Their 74-run partnership in just 5.2 overs effectively sealed the game early. Tom Kohler-Cadmore then anchored the chase, finishing unbeaten on 38.

Northamptonshire struggled to build momentum early on after losing explosive opener Chris Lynn for just one run in the fourth over. By the end of the powerplay, they had lost two wickets and managed only 45 runs. Somerset’s pace and spin bowlers cleverly controlled the middle overs, limiting the Steelbacks’ scoring opportunities on the worn pitch.

Apart from McManus’s heroics, no Northamptonshire batsman managed to make a significant impact, as wickets fell regularly to the disciplined Somerset bowling attack. The visitors’ innings eventually fizzled out well short of a competitive total.

Somerset’s openers then launched a fierce counterattack, with Smeed setting a rapid tone early on. Despite a dropped catch off Thomas Rew, the pair maintained a blistering rate, hitting several sixes and boundaries. Although Smeed was eventually caught, the innings momentum was sustained by Rew and Kohler-Cadmore.

Rew’s powerful strokeplay and Kohler-Cadmore’s composed batting put the game beyond doubt, with the latter gaining valuable runs after battling injury earlier in the season. Somerset also welcomed back skipper Lewis Gregory, bolstering a squad in strong form ahead of their final group match against Worcestershire this Sunday.

With this emphatic victory, Somerset keeps the door open for a quarter-final spot, setting up an exciting finale to their Vitality Blast group campaign.
