Somerset Cruise Past Northants to Set Up Exciting Final Day Showdown

Somerset’s explosive openers, Will Smeed and Thomas Rew, delivered a dazzling performance to keep their Vitality Blast quarter-final aspirations firmly on track with a decisive seven-wicket victory over the Central and West Group leaders, Northamptonshire Steelbacks, at Taunton.

Northamptonshire, having lost the toss, posted a competitive 162 for eight. The star of their innings was Lewis McManus, who dazzled with a career-best 76 off just 43 balls, laced with 7 fours and 4 sixes. However, Daniel Sams was exceptional for Somerset, snaring three crucial wickets for 16 runs in his four overs.

In response, Somerset chased down the target confidently, finishing 164 for three with five overs to spare. Both Smeed and Rew lit up the innings, scoring 46 runs each off just 20 balls, forging a blistering partnership of 74 runs in just 5.2 overs that effectively settled the contest. Tom Kohler-Cadmore then guided Somerset to the finish line, remaining unbeaten on 38.

Despite being assured of a home quarter-final spot, the Steelbacks struggled to build momentum after the early dismissal of the dangerous Chris Lynn for just one run from nine balls, caught at mid-off off Jake Ball’s bowling. By the end of the six-over powerplay, they were 45 for two, with Ricardo Vasconcelos falling cheaply to a catch at deep point off Craig Overton.

Somerset’s bowlers expertly slowed the scoring rate on the worn pitch, with seamers and spinners alike keeping the pressure on. Apart from McManus, the Northants batsmen found it tough to find rhythm, as Nathan McSweeney, David Willey, and Saif Zaib contributed modest scores before succumbing to various Somerset bowlers.

McManus reached a quickfire half-century off 31 balls but soon fell to the last ball of the innings, leaving Northamptonshire’s total looking below par on a warm, high-scoring evening at the Cooper Associates County Ground. Sams' clever use of cutters and slower deliveries earned him the wickets of Louis Kimber and Gus Miller, while Riley Meredith finished strongly despite some late punishment from McManus.

From the outset, Somerset’s chase was aggressive. Smeed raced to 31 in just three overs, and when partner Rew was dropped on 10, the duo capitalised, smashing the third six of the innings and taking their partnership to 50 in only 23 balls. Their onslaught continued until Smeed was caught at deep square off Ben Sanderson, who also bowled a maiden over to end the powerplay with Somerset on 74 for one.

Rew responded swiftly with a six over mid-wicket off George Scrimshaw, and Kohler-Cadmore echoed the feat moments later. The score stood at 106 for two when Rew’s promising innings ended with a catch at deep square. Kohler-Cadmore, often hindered by injury this season, took advantage of the strong start to bolster Somerset’s progress. James Rew contributed with a flurry of boundaries before departing for 24, but at that stage, victory was assured.

With their skipper Lewis Gregory returning from injury, Somerset looks to be in formidable form as they prepare for their final group fixture against Worcestershire on Sunday, where a win would secure their place in the quarter-finals.
