Somerset County Hall C Block Sold for Redevelopment

Somerset County Council has completed the sale of C Block of County Hall, which will soon be redeveloped into much-needed key worker accommodation for the town.

The redeveloped building will be operated by Hyve, a not-for-profit provider of key worker housing. Hyve focuses on enhancing community wellbeing and providing support for tenants, especially those working in public services such as the NHS, education, and community safety.

The sale of the building to Prime, a specialist developer of health and care property, is a strategic move due to its proximity to Musgrove Park Hospital, offering the potential to provide housing for hospital staff within walking distance. The purchase was in line with Somerset Council’s Asset Management Strategy, enabling the release of funds to protect and deliver vital services.

Will Bilbrough, Technical Development Director at Prime, emphasized the transformative impact of well-designed accommodation on key workers, enhancing their overall wellbeing and retention with employers. Somerset Council’s Lead Member for Strategic Asset Management, Cllr Mike Rigby, expressed satisfaction with the sale, affirming the commitment to making informed decisions to secure income and protect essential services.

The next step involves Prime making a planning application to Somerset Council’s planning department for a change of use for the building. Following approval, the company will commence design work and engage the local community through public drop-in sessions.

While the cost of the purchase and redevelopment timeline remains undisclosed, the project marks a positive step towards addressing the area’s housing needs and supporting vital public services.
